何谓“顺口溜”，按照《现代汉语词典》的解释，是指“民间流行的一种口头韵文，句子长短不齐，纯用口语，念起来很顺口。”我们以为把当代流行的这种语言现象称作“民谣”可能更为贴切一些。所谓“民谣”，即“民间歌谣，多与时事政治有关”。如此称说，有如下理由：
一是它来自民间，又在民间广为流传，实乃“民”之家族成员；
二是现今的这些“顺口溜”主要是反映讽刺社会的诸多不良现象，多与时事有关，在褒贬意义上有鲜明的倾向性，与“民谣”定义相吻合。
