相信有很多人都曾為獲得像高盛這樣的金融機構的實習機會興奮，同時又為如何將實習的機會轉化為一份讓人艷羨的工作offer而犯愁。高盛證券部門副總裁Stratford Dennis談論了他對於這件事情的一些看法。他首先提到：實習生們在實習期間犯的最重大的錯誤就是很多實習生會聚成一團，卻沒有去努力融入到資深從業者的圈子當中。盡管喧囂交易大廳會讓初出茅廬的實習生感到有些怯懦，但是如果只是縮在一邊是無法讓其他資深從業者看到你身上的潛力。這對於能否通過實習來獲得一份工作是至關重要的。Dennis本人就曾在大學期間到高盛實習。他據此談了實習生如何才能打動他，而想要打動他又需要做一些什麼樣的准備。Dennis首先介紹了一下的他的背景：我來自康涅狄格州，從一所男校高中畢業之後，我去了賓大主修哲學，政治和經濟，主要是經濟學。我在大二到大三期間在另外一家銀行實習，之後在大三到大四期間來到高盛實習。從2004年開始我就一直在高盛。最初是從交易標准普爾股票期權開始做起，隨後的四年裡我一直在做新興市場股票期權交易。關於證券部門所從事的工作，Dennis談到：證券交易是一個非常大的部門，詳細的介紹要花費非常多的時間。大致的可以分為銷售，交易和其他部門。銷售部門整天都在和職業的資產管理人，養老基金，對沖基金，共同基金等等的基金經理打交道。他們每天的工作都是在幫助這些人獲得更好的業績。而交易部門的工作是管理這些公司的風險以及為客戶提供流動性。而其他部門工作則細致一些，主要是為這兩個主要部門提供一些支持。其所在部門實習生的主要工作和職責也是根據所處的不同部門都有所區別。但是由於實習生許可權往往不夠，所以他們一般都不會獨立的承擔起銷售和交易的工作。他們要在正式員工基本開始上班時也准時上班協助正式員工完成工作，做一些事務性的工作。當他們的能力有所增長之後，他們可以開始參與一些分析工作。但是給實習生的工作難度應該循序漸進從一些相對簡單一些的工作開始，漸漸增加難度。這樣可以摸索到他們的能力范圍，其實和正式員工是一樣的。根據以往帶實習生的經驗Dennis給出一些他自己的建議：作為一個實習生，最重要的工作有兩個，一個是展現態度，另一個就是展現能力。實習生的能力在選拔的過程中已經能夠證明，所遺留給實習生最關鍵的是展現他們的果敢，渴望和飢餓感，只有這樣才能在交易大廳這樣的環境中有良好的表現。另外好的成績是必須的，但是豐富的經歷可以幫你脫穎而出。一個簡單的辦法是向人們講出你的故事，講出那些你所做過的非凡的事，向人們展示你的能力和對成功的渴望足以勝任這樣的一個工作。我想說的一點是：直接一點就好，沒必要委婉。要展現出你渴望得到這份工作的強烈慾望，特別是想要在這家公司為你的老闆工作的強烈慾望。這是非常關鍵的，否則即便你在實習期間展現出了非常強的工作能力，也可能不會得到這份工作。
