Ocean covers almost three quarters (71%) of the surface of the Earth, and nearly half of the world's marine waters are over 3000 m deep.
This global, interconnected body of salt water, called the World Ocean, is generally divided by the continents and archipelagos into the following bodies, from the largest to the smallest: the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean. The last one is oceanographically better described as a mediterranean sea, however.
Smaller regions of the oceans are called seas, gulfs, straits and other names.
Geologically, an ocean is an area of oceanic crust covered by water. Oceanic crust is the thin layer of solidified volcanic basalt that covers the Earth's mantle where there are no continents. From this point of view, there are three "oceans" today: the World Ocean, and the Black and Caspian Seas that were formed by the collision of Cimmeria with Laurasia. The Mediterranean Sea is very nearly its own "ocean", being connected to the World Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar, and indeed several times over the last few million years movement of the African Continent has closed the strait off entirely, making the Mediterranean a fourth "ocean". (The Black Sea is connected to the Mediterranean through the Bosporus, but this is in effect a natural canal cut through continental rock some 7000 years ago, rather than a piece of oceanic sea floor like the Strait of Gibraltar.)

Cheng Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding – Cheng, Sichuan, China: The May 12th earthquake in China’s Sichuan Province measured 7.9 on the Richter scale, and was one of our planet’s most devastating natural disasters in recent history. The principal areas affected were in the Qionglai and Minshan mountain ranges, home to incredible biodiversity and the principle remaining habitat of giant pandas. Almost 90 percent of remaining wild giant pandas live in the regions most impacted by the quake. The Fund recently granted a $10,000 Animal Crisis Grant to the Cheng Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to help with veterinary costs and care of the rescued giant pandas after the earthquake and help rebuild infrastructure of the region’s nature reserves.
Shanshui Conservation Center – Beijing, China: Visitors to this year’s Olympics in Beijing may encounter the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund ring their stay. The Fund recently granted $10,000 (discretionary grant) to the Shanshui Conservation Center, a China-based extension of Conservation International. The grant will help proce and distribute 20,000 Fund-branded “Green Dining Cards” to restaurants and hotels throughout the city. Clearly identifying menu items to avoid, the cards were proced with the goal of advancing public awareness of the health, safety, ecological, scientific, and legal issues surrounding wild animal consumption. The issue of illegal wildlife trade and bushmeat intended for high-end markets are among the most pressing wildlife conservation challenges of our time.
In addition to these Fund-supported cards, many high-profile Chinese athletes and other well-known indivials are also helping raise awareness about these issues. Specifically, our own Julie Scardina, joined by a tiger and several other animal ambassadors, appeared this week on the Today Show to celebrate some of China’s most spectacular animals and ways that Beijing Olympics visitors can help protect wildlife throughout the region.

Pollution
Sea pollution is becoming an increasing problem for our planet and we have a responsibility to rece sea pollution.
I need to describe the problem. Our ship currently mps all its rubbish into the sea.It's easy to result in huge endanger. First of all, Non-organic substances such as plastic bags kill fish and whales. Because fish get trapped and whales cannot digest them. Secondly some rubbish is inherently toxic.
I can suggest some solutions. First and foremost we can create a better system of disposing of rubbish for instance. We ought to store rubbish. Next, we are supposed to make ships environmentally and friendly. A case in point is that we should stop providing plastic bags.
We must act now before it is too late!
Rece Sea Pollution
Several problems are caused by the non-organic substance. We ought not to pour wastes into the ocean, because it not only pollutes the ocean, but also lead to a series of harmful consequence. First and foremost, the non-organnic things, for instance, plastic bags, may kill fish and whales. Second, fishes can't digest them. Finally, some of the rubbish is inherently toxic, they will posion marine life.
We must take actions to protect our whale from dying. One thing we should do is creating a better system of disposing of rubbish. Another effective solution is making ships environmentally friendly. Sypermarkets shall stop the giving of plastic bags.
As a captain of the ship, you should spare no efforts to think more helpful ideas and stop mping rubbish from now on. We all need to raise awareness of these problems. It now becomes necessary that we must act now, before it is too late!
Sea pollution
Between 75 and 80% of marine pollution is caused by land, particularly agriculture. 30% of this is from the atmosphere. Around 12% of the pollution is caused by maritime transport.
In South America, 98% of domestic wastewater ends up, untreated, in the sea. The countries along the Mediterranean Sea throw 50 million tons of waste into it every year and the Chinese throw 60 million tons of waste into the Yellow sea daily. Over half of the hydrocarbon discharge comes from continents, 5% comes from oil tanker accidents, 20% comes from waste and other ship-related accidents, 4% from sea exploitation and 11 to 15% is e to natural causes. Accidental pollution through hydrocarbon is significantly decreasing and only represents a small percentage of waste through degassing estimated at between 1.5 and 3 million tons of oil a year. In 2003, according to the WWF, between 0.7 and 1.3 million tons of oil were spread by degassing in the Mediterranean. According to the Ifremer (the French Institute for Exploitation of the Sea), coastal water pollution cost the world economy almost 12.8 billion dollars in 2006.
Marine pollution is the result of procts being thrown into seas and oceans, mostly by mnkind: domestic waste (sewage and rubbish, pollutants in runoff water...), instrial waste (hydrocarbons, metals, synthetic chemical and organic substances, radionuclides...) and agricultural waste (fertilisers, pesticides...).
This includes water pollution and marine sediments, and more generally all damage to marine ecosystems caused by harmful substances being discharged into the sea, either by their nature or their quantity.
Sea Pollution
Marine environment is one in water, seawater tolerance hydrolyzate and suspended solids, seabed sediment and marine organisms, including complex systems. Ocean rich biological resources, mineral resources, chemical resources and power resources is an indispensable resource treasure house of human beings, with human survival and development of the relationship very close.
The main objective of the current marine conservation is to protect the living marine resources, so as not to failure, in order for human sustainable use. In particular, give priority to protect those valuable and critically endangered marine life. According to the UN for investigation, e to overfishing, accidental capture and killing of non-target to allow hunting of marine, coastal shoreline construction, mangrove deforestation, widespread marine pollution, at least the world's 25 most valuable fishery resources depleted, whales, sea turtles, manatees and many other marine animals face extinction risk. Is expected that with the expansion of the scale of ocean development,Marine living resources are likely to cause more damage.
The task of the first marine protected right to stop over-exploitation of living marine resources and secondly to protect the habitat of marine life or habitat, in particular, their migration, spawning, foraging, avoiding predators coast, tidal flats, estuaries, coral reefs, it is necessary to prevent the heavy metals, pesticides, oil, organic and easy to proce nutrients such as eutrophication of marine pollution. Preservation of the marine living resources of the natural regeneration capacity and water purification capacity, preservation of the marine ecological balance, to ensure sustainable human development and utilization of the oceans.
Polluting the seas
The seas and oceans receive the brunt of human waste, whether it is by deliberate mping or by natural run-off from the land.
In fact over 80% of all marine pollution comes from land-based activities and many pollutants are deposited in estuaries and coastal waters. Here the pollutants enter marine food chains, building up their concentrations until they reach toxic levels. It often takes human casualties to alert us to pollution and such was the case in Minimata Bay in Japan when many people died as a result of a pollutant building up in food chains. A factory was discharging waste containing methyl mercury in low concentrations into the sea and as this pollutant passed through food chains it became more concentrated in the tissues of marine organisms until it reached toxic levels.
As a consequence 649 people died from eating fish and shellfish contaminated with mercury and 3500 people suffered from mercury poisoning.

The Sea
What do you know about the sea? Some people know about it, but others don’t. The sea looks beautiful on a fine sunny day, but when there’s a strong wind, it’s very rough. What else do you know about it?
Of course, the sea is very big. In the world, there is more sea than land. Do you know Hainan Island? It’s really very nice. We can see beaches, trees and the sea. We can swim and visit a lot of beautiful places.
When you swim in the sea, you feel that the water is salty.
At last, I tell you about the Dead Sea. Fish can’t live in it, because it’s dangerous. This sea is too salty.
The sea is nice, but sometimes it’s not good.
The Sea 海
(1)
The Sea! the Sea! the open Sea!
The blue, the fresh, the ever free!
Without a mark, without a bound,
It runneth the earth's wide regions 'round; 它围绕着大地;
It plays with the clouds; it mocks the skies; 与云彩嬉戏,向苍穹嘲弄;
Or like a cradled creature lies.
(2)
I'm on the Sea! I'm on the Sea!
I am where I would ever be; 这儿是我永远愿待的地方;
With the blue above, and the blue below,
And silence wheresoe'er I go; 处处都是一片寂寞,
If a storm should come and awake the deep,
What matter? I shall ride and sleep.
(3)
I love (oh! how I love) to ride
On the fierce foaming bursting tide,
When every mad wave drowns the moon,
Or whistles aloft his tempest tune,
And tells how goes the world below,
And why the south-west blasts do blow.
(4)
I never was on the ll tame shore
but I lov'd the great Sea more and more, 只是愈来愈沉迷于海上,
And backwards flew to her billowy breast,
Like a bird that seeketh its mother's nest; 忽忙地飞回那涛涛巨浪的怀抱;
And mother she was, and is to me; 对我而言她就是慈母;
For I was born on the open Sea!

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message for World Oceans Day
8 June, 2011
Oceans play a key role in our daily lives. They are integral to sustainable development and an important frontier for research. As scientists explore the oceans at greater depths than ever before, they continue to discover new forms of marine life. This research has great potential to advance human well-being.
But, if we are to fully benefit from what oceans have to offer, we must address the damaging impacts of human activities. The diversity of life in the oceans is under ever-increasing strain. Over-exploitation of marine living resources, climate change, and pollution from hazardous materials and activities all pose a grave threat to the marine environment. So does the growth of criminal activities, including piracy, which have serious implications for the security of navigation and the safety of seafarers.
Much action is already being taken within the framework of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea — our “constitution for the oceans”. More than 15 years after the Convention’s entry into force, it continues to act as our guide. But if we are to safeguard the capacity of the oceans to service society’s many and varied needs, we need to do much more. On this second annual commemoration of World Oceans Day, I urge Governments and citizens everywhere to acknowledge the enormous value of the world’s oceans — and do their part in ensuring their health and vitality.

Oceans cover about 70% of the Earth's surface. The oceans affect many things on the Earth, especially the weather and temperature. The oceans are all connected to one another. There were four recognized oceans: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic.
The oceans and seas contain about 5 x 10 16 tons of salts. The salt content of ocean water is different. The least salty seas are in the North and South poles, because of the melting ice and a lot of rain.
There are many waves on the oceans, the winds cause waves. If the winds are stronger, the waves will be larger. A tsunami is a series of huge waves, it caused by an underwater earthquake, or a small comet hit the ocean.
Tide rises and falls of large area of water. Tides are caused by the gravitational interaction between the Earth and the Moon.
The water cycle starts form oceans. The water from ocean to air to ground to ocean.
