说一下学习口语的几个误区:

1. 关于方法。看到网上的那些口语教学贴大多无外乎两种观点:

一种说法是告诉读者要多听BBC,VOA或是其他PODCAST之类的听力素材,花比如一周的时间精听特定某一小段,直到自己能用和它一样的语调脱口而出。这种方法不知害了多少人,首先听多了不代表会开口说,光听不思考只是机械地输入,会使你忽略其中的语法、结构、单词如何使用等细节。这种方法会造成的后果,是当你开口表达某件事时你会惯性地把你所背诵的某一整句话一起说出来。简言之,这种方法不能把你所背的内容化为己用。其次,这样机械练习非常耗费精力。一句话说3,4遍我们就会嫌人唠叨,何况是一段话反复听一周。

另一种说法是让你开口说,不断和老外对话,从而自然而然地掌握口语。这种方法看似对其实也不怎么可行。首先是要有这样的练习环境,我想除了在外企工作或是国外留学以外,没多少人能在平时有时间和老外闲聊,并且这个极品老外还很客气地一句句纠正你口语中的错误。另一种途径就是去报那些所谓一对一培训,不仅价格高而且不实用,培训机构的老外一般也都没受过正规的师范教育(顺便在这里宣泄一句,不敢说得太绝对,但来国内发展的那些外教或是培训机构的老外,至少八成以上是没有一技之长专程来国内骗吃骗喝骗小姑娘,多少无知女生被搞上床然后不出几天就看清嘴脸的,说句痛快话真该把这些人渣全赶出国内)。其次在你和老外对话的过程中,你所使用的是你非常熟悉的那些语句,也就是说对话只能提高熟练程度,并没有实质性的提高。

2. 关于素材

我很不推荐BBC, VOA这样的听力素材。无论你的听力好到什么程度你都有可能听不懂其中新闻在讲什么,因为你没有相关的背景。无论你的口语好到什么程度你都达不到他们说话的语速,因为他们的职业就是做新闻的。同理的也包括CNN, NY TIMES这样的新闻网站,当然如果你看得多了知道新闻的来龙去脉那自然没有问题。相比倒是比如<新概念>这样的教学教材更适合练习口语的人,其中句式用法更为多样化,使用也比较标准。另外你可以在网上搜索国外的一些口语教材,你会发现比之国内的那些应试教材要地道、可行得多。

3.关于俚语

有些人学口语先从俚语入手,那基本也毁了。我想那些学俚语的恐怕是受美剧的影响,但事实是在中国根本不需要学什么俚语,因为除了工作和正式场合会用到英语之外,其他时间我们用不到。至于要和老外打交道,那也只需要学一些正常的日常对话用语就行。所以别花过多心思在俚语上。

什么才是练习口语的关键?我总结了以下三点供参考。

1.思维:很多人口语不好不是因为发音或是听力的原因,而是遇到需要表达的时候不知道说什么好。尤其是在遇到开放性问题时很多人一上来就会乱了阵脚。比如要你说说对最近某件社会热点事件的看法时,很多人可能用中文也表达不清,更不用说要在脑内转换成英文。(应试教育的产物?)所以首先要加强的就是对观点的中文表述能力,也就是加强思维的逻辑性。这可能需要很长一个过程,但在遇到某些常见问题时我们能通过一种思维模板来作出反应。比如面试时会被问到:Why would you prefer working in a small team rather than in a work group? 这时你需要想到的是:要有一个明确的观点,至少3条论据,其中有一条需要展开说明,还有一个总结。又或是比如你想要论证某个观点正确,你可以用这样的思维模式:列出观点――另一种表述(put another way…)――观点的重要性(if not…)――举例――列出优缺点――其他引伸。也就是说在回答某些问题时需产生一个提纲,这样就会明白自己该说什么,有助于条理清晰地表达你的想法。

2.句式和词汇:这两者也算是很多人学英语的一个痛。有时候和别人说了一大段话发现自己全是用的同一种句型或是词不达意。也就是说我们说的英语不够地道。那怎样才能培养地道的英语,需要观察别人是在什么语境下使用某种句型,在什么情绪下用某一单词。这里只提供一本素材,<The Merriam-webster dictionary of synonyms and antonyms>.以前GRE课上教类比反义的老师提供的词汇书。其中交代了每个单词应该使用于什么样的语境中,推荐有一定词汇基础的人阅读。至于句型可以通过留心网络上各类英语文章得以总结。

3.关于发音。有些练习口语的人一上来就非常注重发音是否地道,一味追求语速,以及连读、失爆这样的技巧,这也很没必要。国人对于发音不需要过高的技巧,但还是至少必须要能够清楚正确地读出每一个单词。

总结一下,思维在口语中的重要性要远大过发音,学习口语不能光靠机械地输入和背诵,而是要动脑子去观察和记忆。
