Britain Enters Final Day of Campaigning Before Elections
Britain's top party leaders are taking full advantage of their last day of campaigning before Britons go to the polls.

Late Wednesday night, Labor leader Gordon Brown visited steel workers on an overnight shift.

"I don't need to tell you that this election is about the future," said Brown. "It's about the future of our instry, the future of our jobs, the future of our young people."

Mr. Brown is facing a tight election. The Conservative Party, led by David Cameron, has topped the latest opinion polls. And, the Liberal Democrats -- traditionally a marginalized party in what has largely been a two-party system -- are scoring high in opinion polls.

Rodney Barker is a political academic and professor at the London School of Economics.

"The three candidates have been up to making themselves as busy as possible," explained Barker. "David Cameron, the Conservative leader, so visible that he's even worked through the night -- he hasn't slept."

Barker says this last day of campaigning is crucial, because so many Britons still have not made up their mind.

A survey published by the research group ComRes Tuesday said 2.5 million people who say they are certain to vote say they are still undecided who to vote for and more than a third of voters said it was "quite possible" they would change their mind on who to vote for by the time the polls open Thursday morning.

Rodney Barker says it is all up in the air.

"The one thing which one can say about this election -- and we haven't been able to say this for any election within living memory -- is that the only certain thing is that we cannot predict the outcome, even on the day before the poll," added Barker.

The ComRes poll shows the Conservatives winning 37 percent of votes, Labor on 29 percent and the Liberal Democrats on 26 percent.

With the votes split this way, no single party would win a majority of seats in parliament. In that case, the shape of Britain's future government will depend on coalitions.

The balance is likely to be tipped by the Liberal Democrats, but so far their leader, Nick Clegg, has refused to say whether his party would side with the Conservatives or Labor.

Barker says what this means is that it could be weeks before the composition of Britain's future government becomes clear.

"Even when we know the result of the election, we may not know what the result is in terms of government -- who will successfully make a deal with who to make what sort of government," noted Barker.

If no single party is able to win a majority of parliament seats, current Prime Minister Gordon Brown would have the right to stay in office until a new government can be formed.

Shanghai tweaks child rules

Eligible couples in the city are for the first time being encouraged to have a second child, as authorities make an effort to tackle the burden of an aging population.
Family planning officials and volunteers will make home visits and slip leaflets under doorways to encourage couples to have a second child if both grew up as only children. Emotional and financial counseling will also be provided, officials said.

"We advocate eligible couples to have two kids because it can help rece the proportion of the aging people and alleviate a workforce shortage in the future," said Xie Lingli, director of the Shanghai Population and Family Planning Commission.

34%。 Shanghai, the country's most populous city, has more than 3 million registered residents aged 60 and above, nearly 22 percent of the population. By 2020, the proportion is expected to rise to about 34 percent.

The country's family planning policy has been relaxed in recent years, allowing couples who are the only children in their families to have a second child.

"The rising number of aging people will put pressure on the younger generation and society. We need to find ways to solve the problem, but it doesn't mean the country's family planning policy will be reversed," Xie stressed.

One salesman was cheered by the new attitude in Shanghai.

"I'm not sure, but such policy really gives us one more option. If family finance permits, I want to have two kids with my wife in the future," said 25-year-old Xiao Wang, who works at a local company. He and his girlfriend are both single children in their families.

However, not all residents are so keen on the idea.

"I don't think we will have a second kid," said 26-year-old Xiao Chen, an office worker. "After all, it is stressful work raising a child."

On Sunday, several hundred engineers and scientists will gather at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and await the end of the Galileo spacecraft in a suicide plunge into Jupiter''s dense atmosphere.

They are the kind of professionals who try to resist anthropomorphizing their machines, even one like Galileo, which has been a longtime companion in their lives and careers. But they freely concede that they will be there at the end as an act of homage.

"It will be the equivalent of a wake," said Dr. Claudia Alexander, manager of the project.

Few flight teams have had to contend with a spacecraft more demanding of their attention and ingenuity.

Launched in 1989 after a long delay caused by the loss of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986, Galileo took six years going to Jupiter, almost half a billion miles away, by a circuitous route dictated by the limited power of its initial rocket boost.

From then on, the three-ton spacecraft was tormented by as many afflictions as poor Job.

The main antenna, the one that scientists counted on for the return of pictures and data of Jupiter and its four largest moons, failed to unfurl. Engineers had to rely on a smaller antenna and an improvised system of data shorthand.

Galileo was further hobbled by an erratic tape recorder. After the craft began orbiting Jupiter in 1995, repeated zappings from the planet''s intense radiation belts damaged other instruments.

In nearly all cases, engineers managed to reprogram software to overcome or work around the setbacks. As recently as last November, in its last encounter with a Jovian moon, tiny Amalthea, the spacecraft "got hammered again by radiation," Dr. Alexander said.

The spacecraft''s fault-detection system came to the rescue once again, turning off nearly all operations and saving the science data from the encounter.

But the tape recorder was left stuck. Flight controllers applied electrical current to the recorder, on and off and on again, repeatedly, until the molecular structure was altered enough to unstick the recorder for transmitting data.

"Miracles continued to happen on this mission," Dr. Alexander said.

Indeed, in spite of everything, scientists rate Galileo as one of the most successful missions of planetary exploration. Galileo''s eight-year orbit of Jupiter included several close encounters of each of Jupiter''s major satellites, Ganymede, Callisto, Io and Europa. No two were found to be anything alike.

Ganymede is not only the largest moon in the solar system, but it is also larger than Mercury and Pluto. Galileo discovered that Ganymede had a strong magnetic field, "something no one thought a moon would have," said Dr. Rosaly Lopes-Gautier, a member of the project''s science team.

Icy Callisto appears to be the most heavily cratered object in the solar system. Io is bubbling with erupting volcanoes, 152 by Dr. Lopes-Gautier''s latest count. The phenomenon was discovered on previous flybys by Voyager spacecraft, but Galileo determined how plentiful and persistent the eruptions are. The lava flows are hotter than anything seen on Earth in two billion years.

Europa has given scientists the most reason to celebrate and speculate. In Galileo''s eight flybys, the appearance of Europa''s frozen crust suggested that it covered an immense ocean. And where there is so much liquid water, could there also be some forms of life?

That discovery sealed Galileo''s ultimate fate. If the spacecraft, after running out of maneuvering fuel, should crash into Europa, it might contaminate that moon with stowaway microbes from Earth and confound future searchers for indigenous life. So the decision was made to vaporize the spacecraft by putting it on a collision course with Jupiter.

"The course is unalterable," Dr. Alexander said. "The last fuel was expended several months ago, to make sure we hit the planet."

Tracking data show that the craft, traveling 30 miles a second toward the end, will crash into Jupiter on its night side. At 12:50 p.m., Pacific time, the old Galileo hands in Pasadena, hearing no radio signal, will know that their spacecraft is no more.

Seven Wonders of Ancient Egypt
The pilgrims that come here today are following the footsteps of those who have come here for 17 centuries. It is gratifying to see people who come here as casual tourists and then become aware of the tremendous spiritual heritage that is here, and they come as tourists and they leave as pilgrims.

From this site, Moses is believed to have shown his people the way to their promised land, and the Jewish nation was born.

Egypt had long had its own icons in mythologies. The most mysterious of all is the largest free-standing stone sculpture in the world. No one is certain who it represents or even who built it. Half human, half animal, the Sphinx has long been considered the strangest icon on earth. At 60 meters long and 20 high, it guards the Giza plateau beside Egypt's two largest pyramids. For centuries, the Sphinx has been seen as the key to life. Pharaohs have worshiped at its feet. Conquerors have knelt down before it. The Sphinx has been subjected to every test, but remains an enigma. Why was it built? Why are the tunnels inside it? Which king does it represent? What power does the Sphinx hold?

They call him Father of the Terra. They are afraid of him. And, can you imagine even the locals today are afraid of the Sphinx? The people at that time were also afraid--Maybe he is just here watching you all the time.

In ancient Egyptian art, the idea of fusing animal with human was nothing new. But this was the first time a human head was sculpted onto a lion's body. And in ancient Egypt, there was only one person who could be portrayed in such a way--the pharaoh himself.

The king, being the manifestation of Egypt, he has to be virile, mighty, fearless and powerful. So, you have here the head of the king representing intelligence, but the body of a lion representing might and power.

The Sphinx stands in a vast U-shaped quarry before the Great Pyramid built by Khufu and the second pyramid built by his son Khafre. It is thought to represent one of them. But why build a sculpture in the middle of a pyramid complex?

It's cut from actual rock. So, this huge rock was standing there. So, they decided to do something with it. And that thing would have been a huge statue that would manifest the king and in the mean time, it would be a symbol for the sun god Ra.

Cuba in the toilet

Now for our "What In The World" segment. Here's what got my attention this week - a roll of toilet paper. Certainly not the normal subject for us here at GPS, but this is special toilet paper - Cuban toilet paper. It turns out Cuba may be running out of this stuff. The government has warned its citizens in recent days that they are facing a toilet paper shortage. And they added this paucity of paper could last until the end of the year, when they expect a shipment to come in.

So how did this happen? Well, the Cubans blame it on the global financial crisis and the hurricanes that they were hit with last year. Now the financial crisis is hurting everyone, but I had yet to hear shortfalls in toilet paper in other places. What I think is really at the bottom of this toilet paper crisis is Cuba's continuing commitment to its bizarre world of socialistic economics. Just two weeks ago, Raul Castro vowed, yet again, to keep communism alive in Cuba, to make sure capitalism doesn't return. In a world of flux, I suppose it is comforting to know that something stays the same.

Cuba's disastrous economy would be a joke where not for the poverty it has perpetuated among millions of Cubans. The whole country is stagnating. Fifty percent of its arable fields are going unfarmed. First and second year college students now work one month out of the year in agriculture. Its insane farm policies lead to frequent shortages of fruit, vegetables and other basic food needs, shortages even more serious than toilet paper. And all those programs they've held up for years as successes of the communist revolution - free ecation for all through college, universal healthcare. Well, Raul Castro just announced that they're gonna have to make cuts in all of these. Meanwhile, the average Cuban still earns the equivalent of less than 20 dollars per month.

Now capitalism has its problems as we have all seen, but at least we are not running out of toilet paper.

Angry typhoon victims

The military helicopters are bringing in the last of the stranded villagers now for some of their relatives and friends, who have been waiting here for days, there is relief. For others though, there is the anguish of not knowing.

"Help us, please save my children, I have been waiting four days already." Says this woman.

At her tent, anger, especially at local officials.

"They said it was safe and we didn't need to evacuate. Now there is not even a road to get back." He says.

And the man, who is the focus of much of the national blame is President Ma Ying-jeou, often confronted by angry survivors as he toured the disaster zone.

"How do you respond to people who blame you and your government, and say listen this was just all too slow to begin with, and then, when it did get underway, it just wasn't enough."

"Now, we certainly, I will take full responsibility, whatever the blame is, because, after all, I am the president of this country."

But President Ma says the slow start was because of bad weather, heavy rain left helicopters grounded.

"Once the weather is good, in one day, that is the 14th of August, we were able to evacuate 2518 people. It's a record."

But there was outrage last week, when he blamed local officials.

"They were not fully prepared."

So now he's seen comforting the grieving, apologizing, promising to do better. But as he opened the weekend baseball game, he was booed and jeered. Protesters demanded his resignation.

"We'll find out, not only to correct the mistakes, but also may try to punish the people who are responsible."

As the rescue operations slowly wind down, the focus will soon shift to rebuilding lives and communities. Taiwan's embattled president told me that simply repairing all the damage from Typhoon Morakot could take up to a year.

Japan's ramen robot
Japan's obsession with the machines has gone one step further with this creation - a ramen noodle robot chef. At the Fuamen Ramen Noodle shop in the central Japanese city of Nagoya, two robotic arms are busy serving their hungry customers, doling out nearly 80 bowls of noodles on a busy day. Kenji Nagoya, the owner of the noodle shop and a robot manufacturer, says nobody gets it as accurate as the robots.

"The benefits of using robots as Ramen chefs include the accuracy of timing in boiling noodles, precise movements in adding toppings and consistency in the taste."

Nagoya's robot factory opened the noodle shop less than a month ago to showcase its latest robotic technology. The noodle shop which sells a regular noodle bowl with a pork broth-based soup for seven dollars is yet to make profit, partly e to the large investment in the research and development of the robotic arms. But the restaurant is definitely getting a lot of attention and building its reputation. Customers say the noodles taste as good as those made by humans.

"I don't feel any difference in taste between this ramen and those cooked by human chef."

Humans are not completely out of the equation and do have to step in occasionally to prepare the soup stock, take orders and receive money. But the robot arms will take care of the rest. The machines are pre-programmed to boil noodles, pour the soup into bowls and sprinkle toppings. Customers get to watch the whole process of the automated ramen making which takes one minute and forty seconds per bowl. During downtime the robots entertain customers by demonstrating various tricks.

It's a drag
A different sort of car concern across the country - illegal street racing, putting the pedal to the metal is often glorified on the big screen, but in reality street racing can be deadly, killing dozens of people every year. It』 become such a problem in one particular Texas town that a professional track is welcoming would-be raced... Oh, I should say drag racers, in an effort to keep the danger off the public roadways.

It』s not NASCAR and it』s definitely not Indy. 「One, two.」 But these races at the Texas Motor Speedway may be much more important.

"We are trying to get people off the streets from doing this illegally.」

And with good reason, just last week, a teen died in a drag racing accident in Fort Worth. Across the country about 30 people die each year in racing accidents. So officials at the Texas Motor Speedway came up with the plan - open this racetrack to everyone.

"It』s an eighth of a mile, so we try to pair them up to where my PT Cruiser isn't racing as a star, you know, Mustang, Shelby Cobra.」

So far the event's been a huge success with about 125 drivers each week. Drivers paid a play just 20 bucks.

"It's just the burning-out, just not having to worry about the cops. And everything is safe.」

"Fastest I've been so far in the eighth mile was 6.1 at 114-mile-an-hour.」

Chad Marquez admits he』s done illegal drag racing before but says it』s not worth the possible jail-time or worse.

"There I read the car hurt somebody, it』s not worth it.」

Here fire crews are standing by just in case.

"Your most drags strips are a quarter of mile, so you can get going a whole lot faster than you can here, a lot of these cars aren't going, 100+ miles an hour when they get to the end. But I think it just gets back to, you know everybody』s get a little bit hot rod in them, you know, that's, that』s the appeal.」
