說起奧斯卡獎, 就不能不先提到美國電影藝術與科學學會(Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences). 這個機構成立於1927年, 致力於推動電影製造業向更高水平、更高質量、更高技術方面發展, 而為了表彰在這些領域做出傑出貢獻的優秀人才, 將向他(她)們授予代表著電影業至高榮譽的Academy Awards(學院獎).
為此, 就必須先得創造一個能象徵電影成就的獎座. 當時, MGM(米高梅電影公司)的藝術總監塞德里克•吉邦斯(Cedric Gibbons)負責設計了這個現在在全世界都知名的小雕像--一個手持寶劍站立在電影卷軸上的騎士! 而來自洛杉磯的雕塑家喬治•斯坦利(George Stanley)有幸的成為了這個小雕像的製作者.
該學會的第一次頒獎會於1929年5月16日在好萊塢羅斯福（Roosevelt）酒店舉行.
這個高13.5英寸（早斯為10.25英寸）, 重11磅（早期為6.75磅）的小雕像起初是由青銅做成的. 二戰期間,由於資源匱乏, 改為用石膏製成. 而今天我們看到的小金人是由錫、銨合金磨光後，敷10K金箔，經過精磨，外面再敷24K金箔，最外層塗上發光漆而製成的.
本來電影藝術與科學學會將這個獎的正式名稱叫做學院獎(Academy Awards), 但實際上世人對這個獎項的更多的認識卻是對它的另一種稱呼—奧斯卡獎(Oscars). 而對於為什麼會把學院獎稱之為奧斯卡獎, 至今也沒有一個准確的說法.
一個比較流行的說法是: 學會的一個名叫瑪格麗特•赫麗克(Margaret Herrick)的圖書館管理員兼執行董事的女士認為小雕像很像她那名為奧斯卡(Oscar)的叔叔, 所以, 她就以此來稱呼它. 之後, 學會內的人員都開始以奧斯卡來作為小雕像的昵稱.
在1934年的第六屆頒獎大會後, 好萊塢的專欄作家西德尼• 斯科爾斯基(Sidney Skolsky)在他那篇關於凱瑟琳•赫本(Katharine Hepburn)獲得最佳女主角獎的文章中, 第一次公開使用了奧斯卡(Oscar)這個稱謂.
到了1939年, 學會也認可了奧斯卡(Oscar)這個名字, 並且開始正式的使用它. 從此, 奧斯卡這個名字就延續了下來, 自至今天.
