A PIGEON, oppressed by excessive thirst, saw a goblet of water painted on a signboard. Not supposing it to be only a picture, she flew towards it with a loud whir and unwittingly dashed against the signboard, jarring herself terribly. Having broken her wings by the blow, she fell to the ground, and was caught by one of the bystanders.
Zeal should not outrun discretion.

The day after her birthday,he phoned his mother.
"What did you think of the bird,Mother?"he asked eagerly.

A crowd of students was gathered on the campus of Oxford University. "You can have no doubt,"shouted a young man excitedly,"that if the Dean does not take back what he said to me this morning,I'll leave Oxford this evening!"
A buzzing noise followed. "What a man of actions!"one said in admiration. "How should we support him and learn from him!"said another.
Suddenly, a girl asked,"What did the Dean say to you, Hob?"
He bent and whispered to her,"Well,er...er...Miss Rose,er...he told me to get clean away from Oxford this very evening!"
Speeding
A speeding motorist was waved down by a police patrol car. 「I'm going to give you a ticket for speeding,」 said the policeman, writing his note. 「You've been driving over 60 miles per hour.」
「Would you mind making it 100, officer?」 was the reply. 「You see, I'm going to sell the car.」
超速行駛
一名超速行駛的駕駛員被巡邏警車攔住後，警察一邊做記錄，一邊說：「我要給你開一張超速罰單，因為你剛才的車速已經超過了60英里。」
「警官，請你把時速寫為100英里好嗎？你知道，我正要打算賣這輛車。」

4. 英語小故事，1分鍾左右
一
A man in the fishing by the river, he caught much fish, but every catch fish with a ruler. As long as the big fish than the feet, he threw back into the river.
Bystanders who saw don't understand ground to ask: "other people all want to catch fish, you why fish are thrown back into the river will?"
This man in no hurry to say: "because of my only feet wide, this pot is too big for the fish."

One hot summer day a fox was walking through an orchard. He stopped before a bunch of grapes. They were ripe and juicy.

少兒英語小故事--猴子撈月(中英文對照)
One day,a little monkey is playing by the well.
一天，有隻小猴子在井邊玩兒。
He looks in the well and shouts :
它往井裡一瞧，高喊道：
「Oh!My god!The moon has fallen into the well!」
「噢！我的天！月亮掉到井裡頭啦！」
An older monkeys runs over, takes a look,and says,
一隻大猴子跑來一看，說，
「Goodness me!The moon is really in the water!」
「糟啦！月亮掉在井裡頭啦！」
And olderly monkey comes over.
老猴子也跑過來。
He is very surprised as well and cries out:
他也非常驚奇，喊道：
「The moon is in the well.」
「糟了，月亮掉在井裡頭了！」
A group of monkeys run over to the well .
一群猴子跑到井邊來，
They look at the moon in the well and shout:
他們看到井裡的月亮，喊道：
「The moon did fall into the well!Come on!Let』get it out!」
「月亮掉在井裡頭啦！快來！讓我們把它撈起來！」
Then,the oldest monkey hangs on the tree up side down ,with his feet on the branch .
然後，老猴子倒掛在大樹上，
And he pulls the next monkey』s feet with his hands.
拉住大猴子的腳，
All the other monkeys follow his suit,
其他的猴子一個個跟著，
And they join each other one by one down to the moon in the well.
它們一隻連著一隻直到井裡。
Just before they reach the moon,the oldest monkey raises his head and happens to see the moon in the sky,
正好他們摸到月亮的時候，老猴子抬頭發現月亮掛在天上呢
He yells excitedly 「Don』t be so foolish!The moon is still in the sky!」
它興奮地大叫：「別蠢了！月亮還好好地掛在天上呢！」
8. 英語小故事。。。
A wolf was almost dead with hunger. A house-dog saw him, and asked, "Friend, your irregular life will soon ruin you.
"Why don't you work steadily as I do, and get your food regularly?"
"I would have no objection," said the wolf, "if I could only get a place." "I will help you," said the dog. "Come with me to my master, and you shall share my work."
So the wolf and the dog went to the town together.
On the way the wolf saw that there was no hair around the dog's neck.
He felt quite surprised, and asked him why it was like that?
"Oh, it is nothing," said the dog. "Every night my master puts a collar around my neck and chains me up. You will soon get used to it."
"Is that the only reason?" said the wolf. "Then good-bye to you, my friend. I would rather be free."
一隻狼快要餓死了，一隻狗看見後問他：「你現在的無規律的生活一定會毀掉你，為什麼不像我一樣穩定地幹活並有規律地獲得食物呢?」
狼說：「如果我有個地方住，我沒有意見。」狗回答說：「跟我到主人那裡去，我們一起工作。」於是狼和狗一起回到了村子。
在路上，狼注意到狗的脖子上有一圈沒有毛，他很奇怪地問為什麼會那樣。
「噢，沒有什麼，」狗說，「我的主人每天晚上都用一條鐵鏈子拴住我，你很快就會習慣的。」「就是因為這個原因嗎?」狼說道，「那麼，再見了，我的朋友，我寧願選擇自由。」
寓意:自由比安樂更重要。
