何谓“顺口溜”，按照《现代汉语词典》的解释，是指“民间流行的一种口头韵文，句子长短不齐，纯用口语，念起来很顺口。”我们以为把当代流行的这种语言现象称作“民谣”可能更为贴切一些。所谓“民谣”，即“民间歌谣，多与时事政治有关”。如此称说，有如下理由：
一是它来自民间，又在民间广为流传，实乃“民”之家族成员；
二是现今的这些“顺口溜”主要是反映讽刺社会的诸多不良现象，多与时事有关，在褒贬意义上有鲜明的倾向性，与“民谣”定义相吻合。
所不同之处突出在一“新”字上。由于这类民谣主要是二十世纪八十年代以来出现的现象，是伴着中国改革开放而兴起，是新时期的“语言产物”，且方式上有其独特性——人们只是口头说讲，而不以音乐的形式唱诵——因此，我们冠以一“新”字，谓之“新民谣”，以示区别传统民谣。
当代中国“新民谣”所以如此“发达”，除了深刻的社会原因之外，其载体——语言——形式的特点也是“功”不可没的。从上述所举的众多例证来看，新民谣都具有一个共同的特点：易于上口，悦耳响亮，好念好记，且幽默诙谐，生动形象。正因为如此，新民谣传播起来快速、广泛。从语言运用的角度来看，新民谣从语音、语法到修辞都表现出一套完善的系统特色。
