I think some consideration in this discussionneeds to be given to the age of the pupil. I cannot believe that most childrenof primary school age should be taught by critical thinking methods when theyare not capable of critical thinking at their age. In addition, having themsitting in groups, chatting to one another, does not engender the classdiscipline that is so lacking in UK schools and has such a detrimental effecton academic achievement.
There are certain things for which rote learning is essential, such asspelling, times tables, grammar and these seem to be subjects in which manychildren coming out of primary school are lacking.
