比如 take over,kick out兩個詞，組在一起，成為一個新的詞，本來兩個不一樣的意思，組在一起就成了新的意思。
片語（短語）是指由兩個以上的詞語組合而成的一個有意義語法單位。英語片語都是習慣用語，它相當於我們漢語的成語，不能隨意搭配。片語是英語句子結構中重要的成分，不可忽視。短語通常沒有主語，也沒有謂語動詞，但是每個短語都有一定的結構和語義，在句子中形成一個重要的環節。
論功能，英語短語可分為名詞短語（noun phrase）、形容詞短語（adjective phrase）和副詞短語（adverb phrase）及動詞短語（verb phrase）四種。
名詞短語，主要有三種形式，即：一名片語；二動名片語；三不定式動片語。
名詞短語和名詞功能一樣，可在句子中充當主語，如例①；賓語，如例②；補足語，如例③：

(1)英語短句擴展閱讀：
根據片語（短語）包含詞語的多少可以把它分為簡單片語（簡單短語）和復雜片語（復雜短語）兩大類。簡單片語（簡單短語）的內部只有兩個詞，一種語法結構關系；復雜片語（復雜短語）的內部有多個詞，並且詞與詞的結構層次和語法關系都比較復雜。
還可以從結構和功能這兩個角度對片語（短語）進行分類，因此就有片語（短語）的結構類型和功能類型。從結構上劃分片語（短語）指的是：根據片語（短語）內部兩個詞的語法結構關系劃分短語，可以分為16種結構類型。
固定片語（固定短語）包含三大類：
①結構對稱的習慣語。
②四字熟語，包括四字構成的成語和習慣用語。這類固定短語的語法功能比較多樣而靈活，以每一個短語接近某類詞而定，但又未必具有該類詞的全部的語法功能。如「喜笑顏開」接近動詞，故它可以充當謂語等，但它不能帶賓語。
③專有名詞。這類固定短語具有名詞的語法功能。
