繞口令(tongue twister 或 word cramp)是一種傳統的游戲，各民族語言中都有。在我國過去曾有人提議讓剛會說話的幼兒，連續說幾十遍「一個烙鐵，烙鐵一個」來鍛煉孩子的口齒，因為稍不留意就會說成「一個老爹，老爹一個」。英國的父母也常讓他們的小孩快速反復地說「red lorry, yellow lorry, green lorry.」來鍛煉他們的口齒，真可謂有異曲同工之妙。反復朗讀能使人口齒伶俐，有助於矯正發音不清，分辨英語中一些類似的母音和輔音。例如，下面兩例繞口令，就對學生正確讀音有幫助。

何謂「順口溜」，按照《現代漢語詞典》的解釋，是指「民間流行的一種口頭韻文，句子長短不齊，純用口語，念起來很順口。」我們以為把當代流行的這種語言現象稱作「民謠」可能更為貼切一些。所謂「民謠」，即「民間歌謠，多與時事政治有關」。如此稱說，有如下理由：
一是它來自民間，又在民間廣為流傳，實乃「民」之家族成員；
二是現今的這些「順口溜」主要是反映諷刺社會的諸多不良現象，多與時事有關，在褒貶意義上有鮮明的傾向性，與「民謠」定義相吻合。
所不同之處突出在一「新」字上。由於這類民謠主要是二十世紀八十年代以來出現的現象，是伴著中國改革開放而興起，是新時期的「語言產物」，且方式上有其獨特性——人們只是口頭說講，而不以音樂的形式唱誦——因此，我們冠以一「新」字，謂之「新民謠」，以示區別傳統民謠。
當代中國「新民謠」所以如此「發達」，除了深刻的社會原因之外，其載體——語言——形式的特點也是「功」不可沒的。從上述所舉的眾多例證來看，新民謠都具有一個共同的特點：易於上口，悅耳響亮，好念好記，且幽默詼諧，生動形象。正因為如此，新民謠傳播起來快速、廣泛。從語言運用的角度來看，新民謠從語音、語法到修辭都表現出一套完善的系統特色。
