The Palace Museum, a most comprehensive museum in China, was established on the basis of the imperial palace of two consecutive dynasties - the Ming (1368-1644) and the Qing (1644-1911), and their collection of treasures. It is approached through the Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tian An Men). Immediately to the north of the Palace Museum is Prospect Hill, while on the east and west are Wangfujing and Zhongnanhai neighborhoods. The Palace Museum was designated by the State Council as one of China’s foremost-protected cultural heritage sites in 1961, and was inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1987.
The Forbidden City is surrounded by 10-meter-high walls and a 52-meter-wide moat. Measuring 961 meters from north to south and 753 meters from east to west, it covers an area of 720,000 square meters. Each of the four sides is pierced by a gate. Currently, the Meridian Gate (Wu Men) on the south and the Gate of Divine Prowess (Shenwu Men) on the north are entrances and exits for visitors. Once inside, visitors will see a succession of halls and palaces spreading out to the east and west along a central axis. The buildings’ glowing yellow roofs levitating above vermilion walls is a magnificent scene. The painted ridges and carved beams all contribute to the sumptuous effect. The palaces, halls and towers, strewing here and there at varied heights, are full of power and grandeur, creating an illusion of the fairy land in the twilight. The southern half of the Forbidden City, known as the Outer Court, centers round three main halls - Hall of Supreme Harmony (Taihe Dian), Hall of Central Harmony (Zhonghe Dian), and Hall of Preserving Harmony (Baohe Dian), which are flanked by Hall of Literary Harmony (Wenhua Dian) and Hall of Martial Valor (Wuying Dian). It was here in the Outer Court that the emperor held court and concted grand audiences. Known as the Inner Court, the northern half of the Forbidden City, centers round three main halls, namely, the Palace of Heavenly Purity (Qianqing Gong), the Hall of Union (Jiaotai Dian) and the Palace of Earthly Tranquility (Kunning Gong), Six Eastern Palaces and the Six Western Palaces, and the Imperial Garden, with the Hall of Ancestry Worship (Fengxian Dian), the Hall of Imperial Supremacy (Huangji Dian) and other buildings in the east, and Hall of Mental Cultivation (Yangxin Dian), the Belvedere of Raining Flowers (Yuhua Ge), and the Palace of Compassion and Tranquility (Cining Gong) in the west. The Inner Court is not only the residence of the emperor and his consorts but also the venue for religious rituals and administrative activities. The aggregate area of all the buildings in these two courts amount to 163,000 square meters. The array of buildings are prudently and rigidly designed and arranged in accordance with a code of architectural hierarchy, demonstrating the paramount authority and status of the emperor.
To let the public to admire the treasures in its collection, besides preservation and restoration of the three main halls in the Outer Court, the three main palaces and the six western palaces in the Inner Court, the museum has opened galleries devoted to bronzes, porcelains, crafts, paintings and calligraphy, jewelry and clocks. In addition, certain temporary showrooms are installed to present thematic exhibitions. In recent years, such exhibitions include “A Comparison of Authentic and Counterfeit Paintings and Calligraphy”, “Genuine and Imitation Ancient Porcelains and Materials of Ancient Kilns”, “Art of Packaging at the Qing Court” and “Selections of the Finest Acquisitions ring the Last Fifty Years”, all of which were generally acclaimed.
