推薦人選擇：熟悉你的「牛人」
因此，我們選擇推薦人，也要找那種有一定信譽的。中國學生的周圍，活躍著這么兩類人，一類是「牛人」，比如某某大學校長，某某中科院院士，他們因地位高而突顯信譽。在中國，這些人本和學生沒有什麼學術關系，但學生通過種種關系找到這種人推薦還是有的。另一類人，是學生的老師，他們教授學生課程，指導學生實驗，我們稱之為「熟悉學生的人」，可是這些教授通常知名度很有限，沒有什麼國際影響力。向左走，還是向右走?我們的意見是盡量找「熟悉你的牛人」，當兩者只能選其一的時候，就選熟悉你的人。千萬別為了選個所謂牛人，而找一個不熟悉你的推薦人。信任是建立在熟悉的基礎上的。
在國外，推薦信很多是老師親筆完成，而且要求學生Waive the right to access the recommendation (放棄看到推薦信的權利)。也有一部分教授，因為向其索取推薦信的學生很多，那麼教授就讓學生先寫成推薦信的初稿，然後教授進行修改並最終定稿。而在中國，學生寫完推薦信後找老師簽字是一種普遍的做法。老師很少有時間幫助學生寫作，更何況英語寫作對於很多老師來說也絕對是一種挑戰。
要由事例佐證評語
馬上面臨的問題就是，我們怎樣站到老師的角度看待自己，推薦信寫哪些內容呢?推薦信的寫作內容是有一定規律可循的，或者說在某一些部分是有固定模式的。比如說，推薦信的開頭，一定會介紹老師和學生的關系，是如何認識的，等等。而之後的問題，就是對申請人的各項能力進行評價和推薦了。以哥倫比亞大學的推薦信表格為例，要求推薦人對申請人的聰明程度、學習目標、學習潛力、研究潛力、英語口語和寫作、獨立工作能力、與他人協作的能力以及學習動力等方面進行打分。而這些內容，都可以變成推薦信中描述的內容。但千萬不要把這些內容寫成一個給三好學生的評語，諸如此學生學習努力，認真聽講，樂於助人等等。每一個評價都需要跟一個具體的事例，由事例佐證評語。
