早期近代英語時期正好是英國文藝復興時期。在這一時期里，古代希臘和羅馬的語言和文學的尊嚴地位得到了恢復。當時英國學者中有很多人精通古典語言，他們從希臘語、拉丁語借來許多字，如：incardine 肉紅色，multitudinous 大量的，這就是為什麼英語的字根大多來自希臘文和拉丁文的原因。
幾個世紀以來世界各民族文化互相接觸，給英語帶來了數以千計的新詞。19世紀產業革命以後，科學技術發展，科學家、哲學家、文學家創造了不少新詞，而英語本身又具有開放性，這使英語詞彙持續增長。第二次世界大戰後,科技方面的新詞許多來自英語,新的政治、經濟、文學術語也往往在英語里找到原詞或原義。此外，英語在國際上的使用也從另一方面促使英語詞彙的擴大。據估計，古英語的詞彙約為5萬～6萬個，現代英語大辭典收入的詞條多達65萬～75萬，到了二十一世紀，英語的詞彙量數以億計。一方面詞彙在擴大，另一方面詞的用法則力求符合規范，這兩種傾向同時在起作用。
自19世紀起，英語里大量出現短語動詞，就是用一個淺易的動詞加上副詞或介片語成短語動詞來代替那個較艱深的同義的（一般從拉丁語借來的）動詞。例如,以bring about 代 cause 或 accomplish，以keep on 代continue，以look into代investigate，以put off 代postpone，以 put up with代tolerate等。但是，這不是簡單的代替，而是同時並存，互相補充。
幾乎所有的日耳曼語源字匯（包括一切基本字匯，如代詞、連詞等）都相對來說更短、更非正式。拉丁語源的字匯通常代表更加優雅或更有教養。但是，過多運用拉丁語源字匯，則會被認為矯飾或故意引起混淆。喬治·奧威爾的文章《政治與英語》對此作了透徹的描寫。日常生活中，大部分所用到的詞彙一般是日耳曼語源。大多數拉丁語源的字匯通常用在更加正式的講話和文章中。英語以它巨大的詞彙量而著稱，很容易引入專業術語和輸入新詞到日常使用中。另外，俚語也為舊詞換上了新的含義。自從電子計算機的普及，使不少與這范疇相關的詞語進入大眾的生活；另一方面，與電信科技相關的新詞，有不少都是透過詞綴的組合來構成新詞。舉個例子：「wiki」本身是夏威夷語，但由於維基網路的普及，創建了「wikify」（wiki + -fy，維基化的意思）；然後又從wikify創建了「wikification」（維基化的過程或行動）。另外，在資料庫中使用的一個新創詞語「serializability」，意思是「把准備寫入資料庫的資料串流化的可行性」，本身亦是源自另一個新創建詞「serialize」（把准備寫入資料庫的資料串流化，源自「serial」，即串流）。
英語借詞的詞源很廣泛。由於曾受到法語的影響，英語詞彙在一定程度上大致分為日耳曼詞源（大部分來自古英語），與拉丁語源（由拉丁語而來，大部分來自諾曼法語，有一些也直接從拉丁語借來）。此外還有希臘文詞源和其它語族的詞源，一些字來自於專有名詞。從外語輸入進來的字，發音不符合自然發音規則，需要標記上各種標音符號來提示發音，如：à la carte, café, coöperate, élite, façade, naïve, résumé 等。比如，café這個詞，如果把e上的尖音符去掉，按照英語自然發音規則，e就會不發音，但這個字來自法語，e是要發音的。又比如résumé是履歷的意思，有三個音節，resume是繼續的意思，有兩個音節，前者也不符合自然發音規則。有一些字有分音符，如：daïs、naïve、Noël，也有一些字有長音符，如：rôle和hôtel。
