串列介面簡稱串口，也就是COM介面，是採用串列通信協議的擴展介面。串口的出現是在1980年前後，數據傳輸率是115kbps～230kbps，串口一般用來連接滑鼠和外置Modem以及老式攝像頭和寫字板等設備，目前部分新主板已開始取消該介面。並行介面.在早期的PC系統中串口的物理連接方式有9針和25針兩種方式，通過額外的子卡擋板與電腦連接。隨著PC技術的發展，25針的串口逐漸被淘汰，目前串口都採用9針的連接方式直接集成在主板上。一般的PC主板都提供兩個串口。標準的串口能夠達到最高115Kbps的數據傳輸速度，而一些增強型串口如ESP(Enhanced Serial Port，增強型串口) 、Super ESP(Super Enhanced Serial Port，超級增強型串口)等則能達到460Kbps的數據傳輸速率。雖然主板一般都集成兩個串口，可Windows卻最多可提供8個串口資源供硬體設置使用(編號COM1到COM8)，雖然其I/O地址不相同，但是總共只佔據兩個IRQ(1、3、5、7共享IRQ4，2、4、6、8共享IRQ3)，平常我們常用的是COM1～COM4這四個埠。
