The Palace Museum, a most comprehensive museum in China, was established on the basis of the imperial palace of two consecutive dynasties - the Ming (1368-1644) and the Qing (1644-1911), and their collection of treasures. The array of buildings are prudently and rigidly designed and arranged in accordance with a code of architectural hierarchy, demonstrating the paramount authority and status of the emperor.
To let the public to admire the treasures in its collection, besides preservation and restoration of the three main halls in the Outer Court, the three main palaces and the six western palaces in the Inner Court, the museum has opened galleries devoted to bronzes, porcelains, crafts, paintings and calligraphy, jewelry and clocks. In addition, certain temporary showrooms are installed to present thematic exhibitions.
